Empowering Ourselves in Chaos: A Step-by-Step Guide

We are constantly bombarded with heartbreaking stories from around the globe—images and narratives from Syria, Palestine, and even within the UK and US, where unemployment, civil rights abuses, government inefficiency, and corruption plague our society. Islamophobia persists, and the oppressed and hungry suffer. Amidst all this turmoil, many of us feel helpless and powerless. In a world where democracy suppresses the human fitrah (innate nature) and promotes greed, our voices often seem unheard. The children and women of Gaza, and the broader Ummah, feel this powerlessness and hopelessness acutely. We are bleeding pain but yet remain steadfast by the Grace of Allah.

Through pain comes hope

Contrary to these feelings of helplessness, we hold the power to change. The decision to feel helpless or to empower ourselves lies within us. Before we can change the world, we must first change ourselves. This begins with character development and becoming individuals of truth and trust, embodying the principles that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was known for—truthfulness and trustworthiness.
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Qur’an, 13:11) With this guiding principle, let us embark on a step-by-step process towards self-empowerment and ultimately, change.

  1. Change Yourself, Then Others
Many aspire to change the world but neglect the necessary internal transformation. You cannot advocate for peace, justice, or kindness if you have not established these ideals in your own life. Hypocrisy undermines your efforts, and true change must begin within. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) exemplified this approach. He began his mission by changing himself and then inviting his family and close friends to Islam. Only after establishing a strong foundation did he extend his message to his tribe and beyond. This method ensures the purity of your activism and aligns your actions with the will of Allah (SWT). Begin with yourself, then your family, friends, neighbors, community, and eventually, the world.

  2. Find a Cause You Are Passionate About
Engaging in causes you are passionate about prevents burnout and ensures long-term impact. Identify what resonates deeply with you—be it humanitarian aid, environmental conservation, or educational initiatives—and dedicate your efforts there. For instance, supporting organisations like HelpYateem.org can align your passion with meaningful impact.

  3. Offer Your Services to an Organisation
Find an organisation that aligns with your cause and offer your time, skills, and energy. Whether it’s a Muslim or non-Muslim organisation, your involvement should make a tangible impact. If no organisation aligns with your passion, consider starting your own initiative. Platforms like 99e provide resources for creating and managing projects, enabling you to be the change you wish to see.

  4. Keep It Humble
Avoid letting ego drive your activism. Celebrating success is fine, but always keep your intentions pure and for the sake of Allah. Humility ensures your efforts are genuine and impactful. Remember, true service often goes unrecognised by others, but Allah sees and rewards all.

  5. Maintain a Spiritual Routine
Neglecting spirituality can undermine your activism. Establish a routine of reading the Qur’an, praying on time, and engaging in spiritual practices. The Prophet (SAW) balanced service to others with worship, and we must do the same to sustain our spiritual health.

  6. Manage Your Time
Effective time management is crucial. Balance activism with personal life, family, and health. Create a daily schedule and stick to it, ensuring time for all aspects of your life. Use tools like the 99e journal to stay organised.

  7. Stay Organised
A cluttered environment can lead to unnecessary stress. Keep your workspace and home organised and clean to maintain mental clarity and reduce anxiety.

  8. Work with a Dedicated Team
Surround yourself with motivated, like-minded individuals. Effective teamwork amplifies your impact and helps sustain long-term efforts. Ensure clear communication, shared vision, and professionalism within your team.

  9. Succession Planning
Train others to continue your work, multiplying your impact. Succession planning ensures your efforts benefit future generations and creates lasting change. Inspire the youth today to carry forward the mantle of activism.

  10. Think Globally, Act Locally
While global change is the goal, local efforts lay the foundation. Strengthen your community, build relationships with local institutions, and address local issues. Effective local activism can lead to broader national and global impact.

Our society presents numerous challenges, but we must not be disheartened. By focusing on internal change, passionate causes, effective organisation, and humility, we can make a significant impact. Let us take on the responsibility of community members and Muslims, using our resources wisely and striving for progress. May Allah (SWT) guide and support us in our efforts. Ameen.
